Freyja's Day.... Celluloid Kingfisher earrings.

Oh how I love these! They're celluloid with a white coating and clip on backs.  They cover quite a bit of ear! From beak tip to extended wing tip they measure two inches and are approximately one and one eighth inch in height.
I have to position them just right so they hang properly. They're an awkward shape but once I get them on they look awesome! I've decided that they probably are not a good candidate for conversion to pierced. While that's disappointing, I can live with it. They look that good on! hahaha

I find the whole stunted appearance to be a major part of their charm. The wing detail is lovely! But now I can see where they bear a definite resemblance of those Angry Bird characters. How bizarre!

I do believe these were made in Japan. If I'm remembering correctly I saw a brooch pin once that looked very similar. Wonder if I can accumulate a set someday?  :)

What is it about feather hats?

I'm well aware I started acquiring feather hats because of memories of my paternal grandmother.... but you'd think that my common sense would have kicked in by now and I'd have sworn off of them.   Yep, fat chance of that happening!   chuckle    I mean, lets get real about this .... I live in Florida, a semi-tropical climate, and we have more insects that LOVE to munch on feathers and furs than Carter had little liver pills!  (Yes, you'll probably only understand that remark if you are of a certain age! hahaha)
So why? Is it the texture? I have Buff Orpington hens in the backyard and I just love to sit and pet them. Feathers are such a wonderful tactile experience. But then, how many people pet their hats?    hmmm...
Perhaps its the sheen and iridescence. The play of light and color is downright magickal!  Even with natural solid black feathers... the colors that flow across the surface remind me of rainbow obsidian. Who wouldn't want to wear something that looks like that?! Beautiful!

Whatever it is...... I admit to being hooked!   With that said, I've chosen this attractive little pheasant feather hat to share on Style Crone's Hat Attack #29.

http://stylecrone.com/2015/12/01/hat-attack-29/

It needs some feathers replaced and other areas are bare and need filled in. But the colors are the important part! These 'selfies' don't even begin to do this hat justice. When I can round up a friend with a camera I'll try for some better photos that can truly convey how lovely this really is.

Hey, do I look a little bit like a mushroom? :)    I was trying to show that the inside is also covered in feathers. Not a very successful attempt! hahaha

Belated Freyja's Friday......... Thermoset leaf earrings for my birthday!

Since yesterday was occupied by taking Mom to the lab for blood work and dealing with the after effects... I'll just slip this in a day late!
As a little present to myself for my upcoming 57th birthday I found a pair of the molded thermoset earrings that I love so much. And in my favorite color family too.  Oooooh blues!!!   I'm hoping some day to accumulate a parure of this design. Of course, if I could amass sets of every color I'd be over the moon! hahaha
Seriously, I've always loved leaf designs. I try to capture a bit of Nature and the beauty of the tree people when I wear such things as these. After all, Mother Nature is a magnificent designer!  As you've probably noticed, down through time we humans have always tried to copy her. And while we pale in comparison.... sometimes things of great beauty are created by mortal hands during the effort made.  Ahh humans, we're such an amazing bunch!  Anyway, my hat is off to the Lisner company for designing some lovely jewelry and making it affordable to our mothers and grandmothers back in the day.
Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday preparations! Be safe and HAPPY!

Freyja's Day ............ Flowers to Protect.

Well, I've had a week to digest world events and while I'll never understand the evilness and insanity of certain individuals and the groups to which they belong.... I must say that I'm very proud of my species! Our capacity for understanding, compassion and empathy is extraordinary.
It is my sincerest belief that goodness shall prevail. The Universe is Love... and so Love will win the day.
Has everyone been blessed to see the video that's so popular on the internet right now? The one of the little boy and his father in Paris. I'm not sure how to put a proper link to it in here, but I'll try.........

Photos from The 13 Hats of Halloween posts!

I have to say that I had fun with the last 13 posts!   And that surprises me. You see, I absolutely DESPISE having my picture taken. Always have.
But, this whole blog experience is about growth. And I intend to always keep trying! While it was hard to find the time for the photos, it was sooooo worth it! (My mother's dementia is racing ahead of her Parkinson's at this point. Just trying to get out into the yard for a photo shoot with my friend definitely had its difficulties.)
Anyway, I must credit Style Crone's October Hat Attack for triggering my effort.  I do so love my black hats!
Here are some photos that didn't make it to the final posts. Most have me starting to laugh. John Turner and I had a blast taking these! Thanks again John!

This one didn't even make it to a post. But I do love those little feathers.

S0 its navy and white.... I just wanted a picture of it! hahaha

John was trying to make me laugh. And he succeeded... again!

Just having fun!  Medicine for the Spirit.

Hat #13.... The 13 Hats of Halloween!

Bet y'all were expecting the stereotypical witch hat weren't you?  chuckle!  Seriously, doesn't this make an awesome Halloween hat?? I actually consider this one to be commanding enough to be witchy. Plus for the warm Florida weather a sinamay hat just makes more sense. Common sense is a very important component in magick after all!
And this hat is soooo multipurpose. Its a real shapeshifter!  Depending on the clothes I wear it can make a strong showing at a Derby party.... or an Edwardian style tea or garden party....... a thoroughly modern day at the museums and galleries..... or a "dressy" funeral.  (You know the kind I'm talking about.)  And, of course, a bit of spell casting when that sort of thing is called for!  I really do adore this hat.

I just have to post the following photos. Not only do they show some of the details of the hat, but they also show how much fun my friend John and I have when we try to do the photography thing! hahaha
Laughter is not only the best medicine... it is wonderful magick too!

Trying hard NOT to start laughing.

NOT succeeding!

Total collapse. But such nice details!
So to everyone..... have a safe and happy Halloween! And say "Howdy" to your ancestors for me.

Hat #12.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

I had to really dig deep to unearth this hat! It is a bit of a monster. Yet there is still something about it that I find appealing. Its large, impressive and I must say... heavy as all get out. Its like wearing a large crown of sorts. Maybe that's it. Regardless of being cumbersome, it still has an oddly regal air about it!

I'm such a sucker for gimping! haha And there is a beaded accent glued on the crown. Its something you only see if you're up close though. A nice little embellishment!

There is also plenty of netting with a sequined edge gathered on top. It shows up better in the previous photo, but I really like this angle better. (I'm not a fan of sequins! There, I admitted it!)  All in all, there are a few things I'd like to do to improve this grand dame. Mind you, just to give her a more finished appearance. Perhaps she needs to be crafted into a magickal hat. Yes....   now where did my wand get to?

Hat #11.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

What can I say? Hats make me happy!  Especially the big wide brimmed ones!  And its even more fun when the friend photographing me is a such a character! Its so nice to be around someone who has a positive view of life. Friends like that keep you healthy and happy.  Thank you John!
So here is that lovely hat that I had put on the pumpkin at the start of this endeavor. It says Halo inside and was made in England.   I do so love sinamay!  In my opinion it creates just the right amount of shading.  haha

And black flowers.... how appropriate for the upcoming Day of the Dead. Is everyone ready for Halloween yet?

Hat #10..... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

I may have to pretend like I'm Dr. Frankenstein when I get ready to try and repair this beautiful wide brim Frank Olive hat! Yes, this is the one that came delivered in two pizza boxes taped together... and pretty well smashed flat! The fact that she survived in this good of condition is a testament to quality.
The straw is broken in quite a few places due to the abuse suffered. But just look at this gal! Still gorgeous and a perfect size brim for our bright October sunshine.

I plan on doing another post with this hat featuring a surprise accessory. Y'all stay tuned for that!

Hat #9.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

Since the veil between the worlds is getting quite thin by now I decided to dig out a special hat box. It has the small midnight blue clutch hat that Lulu wore to church, my mother's wedding hat and this lovely wool and satin toque that belonged to my unofficial grandma. The netting may be gone, but the memories carry on. Her name was Beulah Fern Reynolds... and what a wonderful and interesting lady she was to grow up around!  And I always called her Mrs. Reynolds... that was the respectful thing to do. None of this first name stuff with your elders!
She had two sisters and  when they came to visit they were like a Midwest version of the Wyrrd Sisters.  Fascinating women! Very intelligent, very opinionated and funnier than hell on a Friday night!

I was really blessed to have those ladies in my life. It certainly gave me a healthy perspective when it comes to viewing the ageing process.
Beulah taught me to always improve myself. Learn and practice good manners. Always try something that you haven't before. KEEP learning.... no matter your age. (All three sisters had been teachers in one room schoolhouses in Nebraska back in the day. And that means from approximately 1916 on.) Be opinionated, but not rude or crass. Remember that the most important book in your home is the dictionary... and use it often!  Be honest and act with integrity... always. Most important of all is to be true to yourself.
Yes, it was really great to grow up with her as an integral part of my life.

So to the spirit of Mrs. Reynolds I would like to say that I love you and miss you. May we meet again in another life.   Blessings and Love from the bane of your existence.

*As a child I asked her sooooo many questions that she nicknamed me "the bane of my existence". I always loved that!  hahahahaha

Hat #8... The 13 Hats of Halloween

I had an entirely different hat picked out for this day.... but after my cat Brave Dave O'Malley was put to rest this afternoon I changed my plans.
I can tilt my head the slightest bit and hide my tear soaked eyes from the world. And that is how I prefer to do my mourning.... in private.

Brave Dave was 15 years old. He is an amazing ancient Soul that occupied a gorgeous orange tabby body. Everyone loved him, whether two or four legged. He had a kind, compassionate and comforting Spirit. I have no words to describe my sorrow at his passing.
I am truly blessed that he shared this lifetime with me.

Hat #7.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

There are lots of different styles of hats.... and its important to know which ones look good on you!  And you can't always follow those charts that show what shape face you have and what to wear with it. (Though they do give you a good track to run on)
I've always felt that if you like it enough then go ahead and put it on! Just remember that sometimes a hat will wear you.... and trust me, when that happens you fade away into a ghostly shadow of yourself.
This is one of my favorite styles. That there are roses is an added plus for me. I just adore florals! And I may have to add a couple of ostrich feathers at some point in time! haha   Oh don't worry, I'll make them removable.  (Yeah, like I'm EVER going to take them off once I put them on. chuckle)

You know, this is how a granny should look!

Hat #6.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

Oh... me and my pumpkin head!!!

As far as purchasing hats goes... then I can say that I'm cursed with my pumpkin head. So I decided to make Hat #6 an example of this little problem of mine! You see, if I buy a hat online I must depend on the seller to measure the inner circumference correctly.    And, of course, that doesn't always happen.
I was so disappointed when I unwrapped and tried this hat on. I can squeeeeeze it down onto my head... but not far enough. :(
Its so cute with that aurora borealis rhinestone accent. And then the bow in the back!  Someone else will love wearing this little hat some day.  Someone with a smaller skull than mine!

Hat #5.... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

Ahh, transformation is in the air.........
Quite a few years ago I purchased three black wool hats at a Bealls Clearance shop. They were all made in China and definitely not of the best quality but I thought the shapes were really fun!   This one has an upturned asymmetrical brim with a crease/fold in the back. Looks better than it sounds, trust me!

With that said, I have to admit she was still visually boring. Which is probably why I rarely wore her.... even around the house. chuckle
I decided a few weeks ago that she had sat around collecting dust for far too long. Either I was going to be able to manage a magickal transformation and breathe new life into her or she was headed for the resale box!!!
So I sat down and did a short visualization. Immediately I could see a large, dark red flower! Oh my, she wants a dramatic splash of color. But ever so slightly muted at the same time.  My job was to find the right shade of red! And while I'm pleased with what I found, it isn't the same type of flower that I saw in my mind's eye.
Oh well, I can modify later if I want to. So with the simple removal of that swirl of mesh material, a lovely red fabric flower and a hot glue gun... we were ready to go. The flower is located toward the back of the hat, so from the front you get a profile of the petals.  A deep blossom was needed and this one did very well in that regard.

     So, what do you think?

Hat #4... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

I just LOVE this one!!!  So for the fourth hat of Halloween I'm wearing one of my all time favorite thrift shop finds. Years ago I spent all of $2 for this fun little beauty.    It just screams 1940s to me!
My friend who took the photographs had a different take on it though. His first exclamation was "STONER HAT!"   hahahahaha     We both agreed that if it was purple velvet then it would definitely fall under that category.
Come to think of it.... I'd love a purple velvet hat!

The velvet covered buckle is a lovely touch! For some reason folks tend to notice that about this little hat. The lining is slightly damaged but thats almost to be expected due to age. (I feel like I've got a few tears in my lining also. Not to mention a bunch of worn out spots and a bent brim! chuckle)
All in all I can definitely see myself stirring the cauldron while wearing this enchanting headwear!

Hat #3..... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

For the third day of Halloween may I present another velvet toque. With an ever so slightly asymmetrical wrap design and a subtle bejeweled drop. Quite the charmer!

Hat #2..... The 13 Hats of Halloween.

The second hat of Halloween conjures up a lovely little spell of simplicity and class. This can be worn just about anywhere.... from a grandchild's recital to a coven get together!!!
A black velvet toque with intricate trim. An absolute classic!

Oh my! Look at the lint and cat hairs! Or better yet... DON'T look! hahaha

Hat #1........ The 13 Hats of Halloween

Well, the first hat of Halloween came with a Spirit that said to me...... "Woman, its about time for a reality check."
And that spirit wasn't kidding! All day I came across people bemoaning the ageing process and all the things that their bodies wouldn't let them do anymore. While I can definitely relate to that, I figure I shouldn't complain about it too much. You either get older or you die young.....  with that in mind I'll gladly take the wrinkles, aches and pains! hahaha
Anyway, when I took this hat out of it's box my thoughts were as follows:
1. I ADORE this hat!
2. Wow it looks a lot more crumpled than when I put it in there.
3. More dents too!
4. I'll have to be more careful with this old gal.
5. I need to find ways to take care of her and fix what I can.
6.Gee, I REALLY LOVE this hat!
Heck, that's how I should think of myself!!!!

Great for getting out and about when the weather is cooler!

This is going to be fun!

A couple of weeks ago over at Style Crone's Hat Attack, Judith wrote that "I've always been of the opinion that a woman can never have too many black hats!"    Well, I whole heartedly agree with that and since we are fast approaching Samhain I got the idea to do a series of black hat posts! So instead of the 12 days of Christmas.... I'll be doing The 13 Hats of Halloween!!!
Soooo... let me see what I have stashed away in my magickal cabinet of enchanted headwear.   And then conjure up a friend or two to help with the photography end of this. (Yes, y'all know who you are! So lets hurry it up... the first post will be on Monday the 19th!)

Freyja's Day ........ Autumnal Equinox

Well... Autumn has officially arrived! Of course it got up to 91 degrees F on Wednesday! hahaha  But you must understand that Autumn in Florida is an exercise in subtleties. That change in the direction of the sun's rays and the shortening of daylight hours. On some days the air feels a little bit drier and the morning breeze finally seems somewhat cool!  (If you get up early enough.)
Its the little things that make a difference this time of year. And I crave every one of those little things!!! For weeks now I've been noticing and feeling little hints and sensations. But it truly isn't Autumn until I smell it! Yep, that's what I said.... smell it.  Every year, usually sometime in October, I step outside and there is an unmistakable scent to the air. Perhaps its just the way dry air interacts with my olfactory senses. I really don't know... nor do I care at that moment. Because it is time for celebration! When Autumn truly has arrived I feel an elation that is hard to describe.
In the meantime, in lieu of vividly colored leaves covering the trees (here that means maple leaves in February. hahah) I rummage around in my jewelry box and bring out Lucite that mimics the beautiful colors and shades that more northerly states enjoy.
So here are a few bead necklaces to add that autumnal flair to any outfit! I will have to photograph the bracelets and earrings later. My Bakelite bangles form the basis for quite a few color combinations. I just LOVE wearing color!
And, of course, I had to include one of my leaf pins. You can never have too many of those!  haha   And if you wear them seasonally appropriate then they can aid even more in connecting you to the flow of Nature. The Wheel of the year turns... so celebrate and express yourself with joy!

Saturday, September 19, 2015

Well that was interesting....

Well, I made a quick solo trip to Sephora this afternoon. All I wanted to do was ask about Bare Minerals make-up... wound up having a consultation! haha   It was quite nice really!
But goodness, everything is done by computer now. They put a scanner up to my face and then the computer tells me what shades are right for my complexion.    This is all so new to me!!!!!   You have to remember that I haven't worn a face full of make-up since my daughter's wedding in 1999!  I was in shock!  What this experience has taught me is that I need to proceed with baby steps. It was just soooooo strange to look in the mirror. At one point the consultant put liner on my lower eyelid..... at that moment I couldn't figure out what I looked like, but I wasn't very happy with it.  When I got out to my car and looked in the rear view mirror it hit me... I looked like Ozzy Osbourne!!!!!  (Definitely NOT the look I was going for! I laughed so hard I thought I'd fall out the door!!!)
When we tried eye brow enhancement I wasn't too comfortable either. My brows have always been pale and with age they just seem to have faded away. Not to mention that I only have half a brow on the left side due to skin cancer surgery.  The whole brow thing will have to wait till another day too.
As for eye shadow, she picked out something that was very subtle and natural looking. Now that has potential!
The other good things on this trip were that I got to try on the foundation that matches my skin. (Bare Minerals brand. And it does NOT makes me itch. Hoorray!) Plus I found a lovely shade of lipstick. (Make Up For Ever brand N10)   So I feel like I'm making some headway here!
Looks like I need to read up on brushes. Used to have a great selection of them..... back in the early 80's!  hahaha   Good heavens, its astounding how things change.    And I don't just mean the products. I haven't looked at myself in a magnifying mirror in ages either.  OH MY GOD!!!!      But.... I can't go back now. I've started on this journey of self betterment and I mean to see it through. And that includes the physical appearance part.     I just have to make sure that I don't look like Ozzy when all is said and done.

So what I did notice was that these are the Goddess colors.
I'll take that as a positive sign!

Freyja's Friday..... late night musings.

Very late night musings... at least for me! Its an hour till midnight and I'm wide awake.  Decided to take a photo of what I see next to me. I have a wooden staff covered in bangle bracelets sticking out of the old umbrella stand and hats piled everywhere because I have NO ROOM!!!  My hopes and aspirations of becoming more organized obviously haven't materialized yet. HAHAHA  Its proving to be a really difficult challenge for me. Between taking care of my mother, trying to work part-time and caring for all the critters that share my life.... well... I'm exhausted and stressed to the maximum.
Kind of makes my whole desire to improve upon my outward appearance seem silly and useless. But I will persevere.... just not at the pace I had originally planned on.

   * Lately I have been perusing through Ebay listings for vintage sari fabric.  I'm looking at oranges and yellows in particular. I don't often wear orange ( only in Autumn) and NEVER wear yellow! So I figured it might be a good thing if I push those boundaries a little. chuckle  Worth a try anyway! A lot has changed as far as my perspective is concerned.... so who knows, I might decide I look good in yellow! hahahahaha Wow, it really is late... "good in yellow"??!!  Did I just say that?  On that almost absurd note I'll bid y'all a Good Night.

Freyja's Day...... Honoring Hecate and wishing for Autumn.

Find myself wearing this more and more lately. I feel safe and protected !  These are actually three keys from the house I grew up in. And old wood frame down on the river. I LOVED that place. So many features that modern homes don't have plus its location! An osprey nest right across the river, an eagles aerie nearby. Owls came out at night.... always loved laying in bed listening to them! When sunset came the gators would start swimming out of the freshwater swamp up river and head out towards the Gulf ... and the lure of saltwater fish to eat! (Better tasting in my humble opinion) At sunrise we could usually look out the windows and see them sunning themselves in the backyard.  What an awesome childhood!!! hahaha  The sound of an old tin roof in the rain is music to my ears. Ahh, that old house was woven into my spirit somehow. So... I wear the keys.
Since the Goddess Hecate figured so prominently in my childhood I have dedicated these to Her.      (More on this subject at a later date)

And yes, I find myself wishing for Autumn to arrive early. Dug out this bracelet yesterday. The colors make me feel good. Why should I have to have any other reason to wear them? hahaha

Saturday, August 15, 2015

Another belated Freyja's Friday! Crazy Ernie and a new bracelet.

Ernesto is such a handsome fellow! But that isn't the only reason he earned another blog spot. He kept placing himself in between my camera and the bracelet that just arrived! Once I took this shot he moved over to the side and let me proceed.   Is it my imagination or is he a big ham?!
Couldn't post yesterday, it was a rough day with my mother. (Enough said about that.)

So... I've always been interested in those Lucite bracelets with the "dots" cast in them. Have bid on several that have the pearlescent dots, but have always been outbid. Then this one came up at a cheap 'buy now' price, plus I really liked the fact that it was green! Hadn't seen that before. So here it is!
These are really interesting. I'll definitely be keeping an eye open for more in the future. This particular one has two flaws/inclusions where a straw colored material was present at the time it was cast.  Perhaps that accounts for the low price, but things like this catch my interest every time. chuckle

The green is a bit darker in person. I look forward to pairing it with some red bracelets for the Yuletide holiday season!    That's coming up faster than I want to think about it! hahaha

Makeup. Now I remember why I don't wear it anymore!

Soooooo, I knew I'd get around to it eventually. Every woman I had talked to about it said "Go for it! Done right, it helps sooo much!"      ~sigh~
Skipped all the foundation "stuff' (there are so many new things in that category since I last did this! And BB and CC and .... what the hell are these things???) and went right to lip and eye color!   Bought some basics at the neighborhood Wally world... L'Oreal, etc..  Decided to do up one side of my face only. That way I'd be able to compare easily.  So on it all went. Eyeliner, mascara, lovely shades of shadow! Lipstick! Use some of it for blush because I forgot to buy any of that! hahaha    WHAT A DIFFERENCE! WOW!
And as I stood here looking in the mirror at my half-transformed face I started to feel a little irritation around my eyes, then lips. That soon evolved into an itch... then a burning itch. And it got worse!   So off to the sink I went to wash it all off! Ah yes, that's why I quit wearing makeup. Now I remember!
Another friend recommended that I try the Almay products.... "hypo allergenic" she says!  So I give it a go. Took a bit longer to start itching and it wasn't as severe.... but it HAD to come off too!
So someone else has recommended a product line called Bare Minerals. I think thats the right name. I have to go to Sephora's to find it. Or order on line, but that isn't going to happen! At some point I'll find the time to go ask the ladies at Sephora if I can try on some to see if I have a reaction. At this point, I don't want to buy more stuff I can't use. sheesh!
But, I will admit that makeup makes quite a difference. Lets hope I find something I can actually put on my face! HAHAHA

Freyja's Friday.... Cats, Hats and Moonglow beads!

Its no secret that I think Ronan is one of the handsomest cats around. This photo shows why... even if he is a bit dirty from playing in the cardboard box! hahaha   What is it about cats and boxes?

As for hats... I have a new favorite. This gorgeous little topper with pansies all over! I adore pansies! They bloom up from a "bed" of black fabric and of course, netting.
Have been trying for a couple of years to find one like this. Every time I see one on Ebay I get outbid. Seems everyone else loves pansies too! Anyway, I finally lucked out and here it is.  I'm over the moon with happiness!
   ~Yes, pun intended.

I figured that I needed some jewelry to match.... so what could be better than purple and green moonglow beads?  I really love this combination! (Found these on Ebay also.)
I must say... these all make me very, very happy. The colors and textures feed my spirit and Ronan's purrs and affection make everything right in my little corner of the Universe.

Yes, this is a good day... may it be so for everyone!   Have a safe and fun weekend and don't forget the Perseid meteor showers next week!
